youbloom: Then and Now

Expanding Connections and New Artist Opportunities

Beginning as a weekly song contest in 2009, youbloom has expanded its organization to connect artists with fans and promote new music content from emerging/independent artists. Our mission is to deliver quality-controlled music and make live music experiences more accessible to all music lovers.

Within a few years after its creation, youbloom had quickly expanded its platform. youbloom’s roots began to grow in 2010 with an annual song contest held by The Boomtown Rats frontman, Bob Geldof.  Three years later, the song contest morphed into youbloomDublin, an emerging music showcase festival and conference in Dublin, Ireland, with 91 artists/bands from 11 countries. In 2014, youbloom expanded further with the launch of youbloomLA, a parallel music festival and conference held in Los Angeles, USA.

In 2017, the company started working on youbloomConnect with a focus on increasing the access to live music for more people. Founder Phil Harrington came up with this unique concept while working with music therapy and recognized the powerful connectivity and inspiration that came from working with music. He believes that music allows expression and creativity, so he developed youbloomConnect to create a creative platform where new and emerging artists could perform.

What makes youbloom so important for these new and emerging/independent artists?

75% of music-business revenues go to the few hundred big-name acts. That’s a lot of percentage missing for a large group of emerging/independent artists! youbloom aims to tackle this discrepancy. We champion the concept of connectivity by using our unique algorithm to match independent artists. We then facilitate ways for matching artists to promote each other on their social media accounts. The concept is that over time, artists’ fanbases will combine to create a huge network of fans who can request these artists to play in their cities, or on virtual tours.

Fans, want to see a particular emerging artist in your city? Sign up today to request your favorite independent artists on youbloom!

Artists, you can sign up too: start building your network today by visiting the Artist Match page!

Friends to Friends: Coast to Coast

07-Jun-2021 By Phil Harrington Leave a Comment

Starting a local band can seem like a daunting task. How do you get venues to book you when you are still “unknown”? How do you grow your fanbases to other countries? How do you get those fans to keep buying your music?

youbloom has the answer: youbloom is helping to uncover the many hidden talents around the world that are often overshadowed by the relatively few mainstream artists/bands who dominate the music industry. Independent artists have partnered with other bands on their own, but youbloomConnect opens the doors to many other opportunities that may have been outside a band’s immediate connections in their hometown.

youbloom is also helping keep fans connected with the artists they love because fans have the opportunity to request artists to come to their city or perform virtually. These direct connections are the bedrock of youbloom and they keep fans interested as bands/artists continue to create new music. Artists love to know they have dedicated fans and fans love the direct connection with their favorite artists!

Even if a band/artist only has a small group of fans, the dedication of those fans to their music is what can help ground them and create a concrete platform to branch off of. Similarly, creating a few great connections with other artists will form a strong web with connections from around the world, coast to coast.

Visit our Artist Matching page to discover new artists from across the globe to start building those new connections!

Why YOU should co-market with other artists:

18-Apr-2021 By Phil Harrington Leave a Comment

youbloom launches the first episode of a podcast series which highlights the benefits of their ‘artist match and comarketing’ – even during a pandemic.

In their inaugural podcast episode, youbloom introduces two emerging artists from opposite sides of the world. They are alternative-electronic-rock band, Makings, from Northern Ireland and heavy metal band, Loss, from Brazil. These bands have been using youbloom’s comarketing facility to expand their musical fan base across the globe.

Originally from Co.Down in Northern Ireland, Makings cite a base of blues and rock, heavily influenced by Dublin’s electronic music scene. Check out their latest single, ‘Punk Girls’ here. At the opposite end of the musical scale, Brazil’s Belo Horizonte based band, Loss, remark that their sound is derived from classic hard rock influences like AC/DC and Iron Maiden. Have a listen to their debut EP, “Lets Go”.

These artists promote youbloom’s Artist Matching/Comarketing program because it has had a positive result in keeping their bands “alive and working”. Although these bands have different styles of music, it has helped expand their audience, particularly whilst dealing with the problems that musicians have faced during the pandemic. They have already received a number of Artist Requests for them to perform in the coming year.

The episode addresses that the music scene has been drastically affected by COVID-19, but there are some indirect benefits that have come from being forced to adapt. Barry, from the band Makings, refers to live-streaming to their own virtual festival, as well as to youbloom’s Virtual World Tours. He believes this technology will be a part of the future makeup of the music business. He states that although they weren’t performing to an in-person audience, playing to the cameras still made it feel like a live show and it created a new enjoyable experience for the band and their fans. Virtual shows are a great way for smaller bands with a limited budget to connect with fans worldwide.

The music industry is changing and the way that we consume music is adapting all the time. Have you considered comarketing your band with another artist? Would you like to play youbloom’s Virtual World Tour?

RunToLife Artist Matching/Comarketing Interview

15-Apr-2021 By Phil Harrington Leave a Comment

Mexican band RunToLife co-marketed with Loss. Here’s what they had to tell us about their experience:

“We’ve Comarketed with Loss and everything worked very well!” RuntoLife

What inspired you to match and comarket with other youbloom artists?

The simple Idea to join efforts with artists around the globe but with the vision & hope to perform live and touring together in the near future.

Has comarketing with other artists with youbloom grown your fan base?

I’d like to say yes because we were presented over a new audience, now we know there are some people who follow us Via Facebook & Instagram and it is very satisfying!

What do you think the future holds for artist partnering in general?

It is a great and innovative idea that will cross frontiers taking music to another level. I think about partnering also in collaboration in the recording of music, videos and of course touring worldwide.

Could you tell us a little about your music and where you are from?

I am from Xalapa, Veracruz, México. In 2007, I joined efforts with friends of mine who were playing in different bands and we had the idea to form a new band based on Folk & Alternative Stuff. We wanted to have a name with real meaning. For that reason we selected Runtolife as our main project. Our influences are almost from second late 90’s we love bands like Vertical Horizon, New Radicals, Barenaked Ladies, Incubus, and many Modern Rock bands of that moment, after joining efforts with Carlos Cortes, Mayo Sotero and José Ramón García, we had more vision and more variety of sound from Brit Pop, Funk and some Progressive Rock. I can say we were definitely in love with Rock & Metal Stuff, however our own research and growth in music took us into different levels and creativity. I decided to compose more intimate songs with an acoustic sound by having an acoustic guitar in the main of everything and blend the rest. That was the start of the recording of two Ep’s we produced ourselves with low budget.

However, we were invited to perform in more local venues until we had our debut in Méxco City when we played with a band called KAAY. After that we met producers Osvaldo Flores & Rafael Rosas from Cuernavaca, Morelos in a battle of bands. We began to start working on our first studio album debut called “Can’t Write Love Songs” between having shows in Puebla, Veracruz, Morelos and Mexico City. We recorded the whole album in almost 1 year until we launched it digitally in late 2010. From that moment we knew our music was spreading out of México. The following years, we had the chance to perform some gigs in New York City, Los Angeles & London. I have to say I did some traveling stuff and played in many open mics but the most incredible thing was to visit Berlin, where I had the chance to collaborate in the production of the sound logo for SEAT Car Company through an international contest called Musicathon. Finally I knew Runtolife was the right meaning to keep writing songs, and for that reason, I keep doing that. The big news is that I am working in the launching of a new album by the end of February 2021 and it is going to be awesome! The journey will continue!

Have you previously partnered in any way with other artists? If so, could you tell us about that?

Yes, through the years we have partnered with many artists for indie touring like Meteora, Never After Before & Monodram. For recording we were invited to record songs with Artists Like Random & Violeta Berdón and during youbloom connect we partnered with LOSS from Brazil and it was incredible to spread our ideas. The feedback was amazing because our music was shown in more places.

Makings Artist Matching/Comarketing Interview

08-Apr-2021 By Phil Harrington Leave a Comment

Irish based band Makings has comarketed with Loss and Dreaming of Jupiter. Here’s what they had to say about their experience:

“youbloom comarketing has been a great experience for Makings, helping us grow our fanbase and build contacts in previously unexplored territories” Makings

What do you think the future holds for artist partnering in general?

We believe the future is very bright for artist partnering. It allows independent artists to grow their fan base around the world without the huge marketing costs of having to do this through other means. With millions of independent artists around the world, doing this in a very deliberate way can level the playing field somewhat when it comes to independent vs signed artists. Independent artists can band together and make their own destiny and opportunities via partnering, working together & hosting shows together.

What inspired you to match and co-market with other youbloom artists?

Comarketing is something we actually did naturally in the past so we were able to identify with it straight away. For example, a lot of the time when we share the stage with other artists we will always mention them and post songs from them on our socials.  So when we heard that youbloom were doing this in a very structured and deliberate way this was a no brainer for us. We love promoting music we like and if we can grow our fan base and make some new musician friends along the way, that can only lead to great things down the road.

Has comarketing with other artists with youbloom grown your fan base?

It most certainly has, and this would be a huge benefit of comarketing. What we really love is the way it can grow your fan base in a completely new country. So yes, we are looking forward to one day playing a show in Brazil and have people from that country already know Makings songs .

Could you tell us a little about your music and where you are from?

Certainly, I’ll start with where we are from. Although our main base is in Co. Louth, we are a mixed bunch with members from Ireland, Scotland, Argentina and USA which we believe  is a contributing factor to the unique sound of Makings. Over the years our music has evolved from acoustic folk-rock to 80s style’d synth-prog till what we are now which is a combination of all these styles with rap & hip-hop added to the mix. If I had to give describe it in a sentence I would say we are ‘Electro-Rock with Rap on Top’

Have you previously partnered in any way with other artists? If so, could you tell us about that?

Yes we have so far partnered with two groups using the youbloom platform. Our first was with a Brazillian band called Loss and the second time was with a fellow Irish group called Dreaming Of Jupiter. We found it a very refreshing experience as we loved the music from these groups. We also find that as well as exposing our music to new territories and fan bases you are also making new friends & work relationships with fellow musicians which can only be for the future musical endeavours of everyone involved.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

Makings really love their food , so if you ever drop past our base in Co Louth you need to try one of our slow cooked stews 😉
