youbloom: Then and Now

Expanding Connections and New Artist Opportunities

Beginning as a weekly song contest in 2009, youbloom has expanded its organization to connect artists with fans and promote new music content from emerging/independent artists. Our mission is to deliver quality-controlled music and make live music experiences more accessible to all music lovers.

Within a few years after its creation, youbloom had quickly expanded its platform. youbloom’s roots began to grow in 2010 with an annual song contest held by The Boomtown Rats frontman, Bob Geldof.  Three years later, the song contest morphed into youbloomDublin, an emerging music showcase festival and conference in Dublin, Ireland, with 91 artists/bands from 11 countries. In 2014, youbloom expanded further with the launch of youbloomLA, a parallel music festival and conference held in Los Angeles, USA.

In 2017, the company started working on youbloomConnect with a focus on increasing the access to live music for more people. Founder Phil Harrington came up with this unique concept while working with music therapy and recognized the powerful connectivity and inspiration that came from working with music. He believes that music allows expression and creativity, so he developed youbloomConnect to create a creative platform where new and emerging artists could perform.

What makes youbloom so important for these new and emerging/independent artists?

75% of music-business revenues go to the few hundred big-name acts. That’s a lot of percentage missing for a large group of emerging/independent artists! youbloom aims to tackle this discrepancy. We champion the concept of connectivity by using our unique algorithm to match independent artists. We then facilitate ways for matching artists to promote each other on their social media accounts. The concept is that over time, artists’ fanbases will combine to create a huge network of fans who can request these artists to play in their cities, or on virtual tours.

Fans, want to see a particular emerging artist in your city? Sign up today to request your favorite independent artists on youbloom!

Artists, you can sign up too: start building your network today by visiting the Artist Match page!

Friends to Friends: Coast to Coast

07-Jun-2021 By Phil Harrington Leave a Comment

Starting a local band can seem like a daunting task. How do you get venues to book you when you are still “unknown”? How do you grow your fanbases to other countries? How do you get those fans to keep buying your music?

youbloom has the answer: youbloom is helping to uncover the many hidden talents around the world that are often overshadowed by the relatively few mainstream artists/bands who dominate the music industry. Independent artists have partnered with other bands on their own, but youbloomConnect opens the doors to many other opportunities that may have been outside a band’s immediate connections in their hometown.

youbloom is also helping keep fans connected with the artists they love because fans have the opportunity to request artists to come to their city or perform virtually. These direct connections are the bedrock of youbloom and they keep fans interested as bands/artists continue to create new music. Artists love to know they have dedicated fans and fans love the direct connection with their favorite artists!

Even if a band/artist only has a small group of fans, the dedication of those fans to their music is what can help ground them and create a concrete platform to branch off of. Similarly, creating a few great connections with other artists will form a strong web with connections from around the world, coast to coast.

Visit our Artist Matching page to discover new artists from across the globe to start building those new connections!

You can also check out our facebook page and join the Emerging Music Connection Hub group to talk with other artists currently working with youbloomConnect.

February Virtual World Tours Review Calgary – Ottawa – Dublin

14-May-2021 By Brandy Corlett Leave a Comment

youbloom hosted its inaugural virtual world tour on February 25-27, 2021. The tours were held in three cities: Calgary and Ottawa in Canada, and Dublin in Ireland and showcased emerging music from around the world. The performing acts were The Blue Dolphins, Ashley Pater, Reid Zakos, and Loss.  In addition to the performance, a local youbloom CityRep hosted a Q&A after each show.

The Blue Dolphins are a folk-rock duo from Los Angeles, CA. Their performance highlighted their perfectly harmonized voices with their soothing acoustic sound. Their song “You’re Not Alone” struck a poignant chord, particularly in these pandemic times. Similarly, their stunning execution of last year’s singles, “Invincible” and “Light in Dark Places” really showed off their musical range.

Ashley Pater is a singer songwriter from Vancouver, Canada.  She performed an intimate set with just an acoustic guitar. Pater’s sensual velvet tones are often compared to that of Billie Eilish and were expressed beautifully in the performances of her songs, “Honey” and “Without You”. She continued her stunning alt-pop-rock set with “Little Blue” and “Hey You” to a highly receptive audience.

Calgary based electro-pop artist, Reid Zakos performed at the Calgary and Ottawa shows.  His music and stage presence captivated the audience, particularly with his wardrobe changes during the set – alternating several different colored jackets between songs. Zakos showed his expert stage presence, even through the challenges of digital shows, performing his enigmatic tunes, “Smoke”, “Falling”, “Neon”, and “Gladiator”.

Loss are a heavy metal rock band from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. They had the opportunity to perform upon the Dublin virtual show. Their passion and drive was hit home by their powerful guitar riffs and energetic, rock-and-roll vibe. They carried a compelling message with their songs, touching on the violence and social unrest dominating our culture. Their set included their song, “The Fear” and tracks from their new EP,  “Let’s Go” and “Burn Inside”.

The youbloom Virtual World Tour prides itself upon a wide range of musical styles, connecting musical artists by passion, message and relatability, not just genre.  Each performer has their own unique style and sound, yet there is always something that youbloom felt were akin to each other. The three tours were exciting to watch and featured great new music, enthusiastic audience participation, and interesting stories about each artist/band.

The Music Industry Lottery: How Many Fans is Enough?

11-May-2021 By Phil Harrington Leave a Comment

Will your band make it big in the music industry?… Maybe it’s easier than you think!

“…the kids all dream of making it, whatever that means…” (Arctic Monkeys).

There is a known fact in the music industry that only a small percentage of artists will ‘make it big.’.  Analytics company, NextBigSound (now a part of Pandora), completed a study back in 2013.  They found that, of the over one million artists they were tracking, over 90% were considered undiscovered.  Further to that, only 1% of the ‘discovered’ acts could be considered to be mainstream artists.  Certainly the odds of megastardom have only decreased in 2021, with the loss of hundreds of grassroots and independent music venues hindering music careers before they even began.

This could be considered a grim statistic for a musical artist in 2021, whether you are playing in your Mom’s garage or even if you are a regular fixture at a local venue.  It’s like holding a lottery ticket for a promotion in your career and never really knowing if your numbers will come up.

Fortunately there is hope.  Kevin Kelly wrote an essay back in 2008 entitled, 1000 True Fans. This economic theory is essentially a quality-over-quantity approach, suggesting that  a person with a product to sell, a musician for example, can make a successful career by concentrating on marketing to just 1000 fans. He remarks, “it is always easier and better to give your existing customers more, than it is to find new fans.”

This concept has only been perpetuated by the increase of crowdsourcing opportunities and the ability to access a worldwide market via the internet.  At youbloom we champion this idea, offering many opportunities to develop your 1000 true fans. Our recent facility, ‘Artist Matching and Comarketing’ offers an opportunity to market yourself alongside another artist, in a different city, state or country, expanding your reach to other like-minded communities.  There is no limit to the amount of comarketing you can do, for example, if a different artist is comarketed with each  month for five years, it would equate to sixty partnerships in locations all over the world.  This would further increase the chances of developing a solid fan base and thus a successful career in the music industry.  This potential growth is exasperated by another of youbloom’s concepts; Artist Request.  Artists are able to be requested to perform by their fans, creating a touring network across the globe.  Even during these tough times with the pandemic, youbloom has been continuing to connect emerging artists across the world via their Virtual World Tour.

Here at youbloom, we encourage emerging artists to forget playing the lottery with your career, we want to give you the tools to help you grow your fan base and develop them into what Kevin Kelly refers to as “true fans.”   This way everyone has the opportunity to win, not just the 10%…

…Take control of your own career, increase your odds of winning, go to www.youbloom.com for more information on how to be involved.

“I’d rather be working for a paycheck, than waiting to win the lottery” (Bright Eyes).
